Journeys of the Heart

Being the Dishwashing

Today we focus on mindfulness. This is best practiced on the most mundane of tasks - like washing the dishes. This video is a perfect expression of mindfully washing dishes - immersing our senses in the soapy water, the clean water, the wet dishes, the squeaking of the sponge, the tinkling of the water. All of it engages us in "being the dishwashing" and pulls us away from our fear of boredom or our need to race through to the next task. This kind of mindfulness practice invites us to be truly present for all aspects of our lives.

Heart Tip

Need more help with mindful dishwashing? This piece by mindfulness coach Patrick Groneman offers techniques that help fully engage our minds and bodies in washing the dishes. He offers a caveat at the end: "Always be kind to yourself when taking on a new practice, and never force anyone else to participate in your weird mindfulness things, no matter how great you think they are."
